Urology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, as well as the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in the care of patients with diseases of the urinary tract and male reproductive organs, including urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, prostate cancer, sexual dysfunction, infertility, and kidney stones. Urologists may also provide treatment for chronic conditions such as overactive bladder and incontinence. Urology is a surgical specialty and procedures such as cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, prostate biopsy, and kidney stone removal are commonly performed by urologists. Urologists also provide preventive care, such as urodynamic testing, which is used to evaluate the function of the bladder and urethra. Urologists can also manage complex cases involving the urinary tract, such as reconstructive surgery for bladder or urethral defects.
