A cystectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of all or part of the bladder, often to treat bladder cancer. The procedure is done under general anesthesia, and the patient may stay in the hospital for several days after the operation. Depending on the type of procedure being done, the surgeon may need to make an incision in the abdomen or the groin to access the bladder. The bladder may be removed using either an open or laparoscopic technique. The main goal of a cystectomy is to remove the bladder and any surrounding cancerous tissue. The surgeon may also take steps to prevent bladder cancer from returning, such as removing nearby lymph nodes. In some cases, the bladder may be reconstructed with a part of the small intestine, allowing the patient to maintain some normal urinary function. The risks of cystectomy include bleeding, infection, and damage to nearby organs. The patient may also experience pain and discomfort in the area where the bladder was removed. Depending on the extent of the procedure, the patient may need to use a catheter for a period of time after the surgery. Recovery from cystectomy can take several weeks or months. The patient may need to adjust to changes in urinary function and the possibility of incontinence. Medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications may help the patient recover and adjust to the changes.
