Adolescent gynecology is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology focused on providing medical and surgical care to adolescents, typically between the ages of 10 and 21. Adolescent gynecologists specialize in the unique needs of adolescents and young women, including issues related to reproductive health, puberty, contraception, and sexual health. Adolescent gynecologists are trained to manage medical problems related to normal puberty and reproductive health. These include issues such as menstrual disorders, infectious diseases like human papillomavirus (HPV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), abnormal bleeding, and pelvic pain. Adolescent gynecologists also provide contraceptive counseling and management and can help identify mental health concerns that are a common part of the adolescent experience. Adolescent gynecologists are also skilled at identifying and addressing abnormalities in the female reproductive system. They may use diagnostic tests such as ultrasounds, endometrial biopsies, and other imaging techniques to diagnose and treat conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and ovarian tumors. Additionally, they can provide minimally invasive surgical treatments when necessary. Adolescent gynecologists play an important role in helping young women transition from pediatric to adult care, and in providing comprehensive, personalized care that is tailored to meet their individual needs.
