Postnatal depression (PND) is a type of depression that affects some women shortly after childbirth. While the exact cause of PND is unknown, it is thought to be related to both hormonal and psychological changes that occur during and after pregnancy. Signs and symptoms of PND can include intense sadness, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, withdrawal from social activities, and changes in appetite. Women with postnatal depression may also experience feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and hopelessness. The good news is that postnatal depression is treatable. Treatment may involve a combination of antidepressant medications, psychotherapy, and lifestyle changes. Support from family and friends may also help women cope with PND. It is important to seek professional help as soon as possible if you think you may be suffering from PND. Early treatment can help reduce the severity of symptoms and prevent long-term complications.
