Latex condoms are a type of barrier contraception used to prevent pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They are made from natural rubber latex which is a type of rubber that is derived from plants. Latex condoms are the most common type of condom used today and are often referred to as simply “condoms”. When used correctly, latex condoms are highly effective in preventing pregnancy and the transmission of STIs. They work by creating a physical barrier between the sperm and the uterus, preventing sperm from entering the uterus and fertilizing an egg. Additionally, latex condoms serve as a barrier to block contact with any bodily fluids that could contain STIs, such as semen, vaginal secretions, and blood. Latex condoms are made with a form of rubber called natural rubber latex. This type of rubber is derived from the sap of rubber trees, which grow in tropical climates around the world. The latex is processed and then treated with chemicals to make it stronger and more durable. Latex condoms come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and thicknesses. The most common sizes are standard and large, but there are also extra-large and snug-fit condoms available.
