Title : Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the cervix a diagnostic and management dilemma

Abstract:

Introduction: A malignant tumor arising from the embryonal skeletal muscle cells is Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). It’s incidence among children 0 to 14 years of age is 3% and from 15 to 19 years of age is 1) is the most common subtype of rhabdomyosarcoma in the female genital tract being Embryonal RMS (ERMS) which presents as a polypoid variant. We would like to describe the clinical, pathological features and the treatment of a patient diagnosed with RMS botryoid of the cervix.

Case presentation: We report a case of a 16-year-old female patient who presented with complains of heavy menstrual bleeding and something coming out of vagina on squatting. The patient underwent a biopsy which suggested it to be spindle cell tumor. On repeat biopsy with immune histochemistry it was diagnosed as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. After her clinical staging she is undergoing neoadjuvant chemo therapy. After 2 cycles of chemotherapy her complaints have subsided.

Discussion: In adolescence, Cervical ERMS is an extremely rare tumor. Many case reports suggest radical surgery but it has its associated morbidity. It has been observed that multimodal approaches improve the prognosis and reduce the need for radical surgery.

Conclusion: A variety of treatment modalities are needed by such a rare disease. This case was approached through chemotherapy & followed by oncological clinical follow up.

What will audience learn from your presentation?

  • In adolescence, Cervical ERMS is an extremely rare tumor. Many case reports suggest radical surgery but it has its associated morbidity.
  • Yes this research that other faculty could use to expand their research or teaching.
  • Yes this provide a practical solution to a problem that could simplify or make a designer’s job more efficient.
  • A variety of treatment modalities are needed by such a rare disease. This case was approached through chemotherapy & followed by oncological clinical follow up.
  • since it’s a rare tumor, research on the treatment modalities will improve the patient outcome specially in young females who want to conceive in future.
