Title : Digital Muscle Testing (DMT) scale for pelvic floor muscle assessment

Abstract:

During this presentation, the assessment of Pelvic Floor Muscle (PFM) using Digital Muscle Testing (DMT) scale will be discussed. PFM assessment is an important part of medical evaluation conducted to assess the functionality of the pelvic floor muscles. It refers to a group of muscles that provide support to the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum. These muscles play a crucial role in maintaining continence, sexual function, and overall pelvic stability. Many factors in women’s life affect the functionality of PFM including sexual, pregnancy, childbirth, and post-natal weakness, complications and conditions like vaginismus, dyspareunia, pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, PFM related complaints during and after pregnancy.

The topic of the DMT scale will help the audience to learn proper PFM assessment skills and to provide better treatment and rehabilitation protocol to the patients during pelvic floor dysfunction, pre- and postpartum evaluation, preoperative evaluation, and chronic pelvic and sexual pain. This scale will be useful for qualified healthcare professionals, such as a gynecologist, urologists, or pelvic floor physical therapists who are working in women’s health. Treatment of PFM dysfunction is multidisciplinary. Based on the assessment findings, healthcare providers can recommend appropriate pelvic floor rehabilitation plans and protocols, even if any further references are required. These might include psychotherapy, pelvic floor muscle exercises, behavioral modifications, lifestyle changes, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgical interventions.

It is accepted and highly recommended for all women health practitioners to use the DMT scale for their further research and teaching wherever possible. The DMT scale is easy to understand and very simple to implement for health service providers in PFM assessment with accuracy.
