Title : Soft-embalmed donor-based pelvic examination training in preclinical medical education: A learner perception study

Abstract:

Context

This workshop was developed to provide preclinical medical students with a soft-embalmed donor-based approach that fosters a supportive environment for building procedural competence, anatomical understanding, and confidence, while emphasizing trauma-informed care.

Objectives

This study evaluated learner perceptions of a soft-embalmed donor–based pelvic examination workshop for preclinical medical students. We hypothesized that participation in the workshop would improve students’ understanding of pelvic anatomy and examination technique while reinforcing professionalism, informed consent, trauma-informed care, and patient-centered communication.

Methods

We created a soft-embalmed donor-based pelvic examination workshop through our Drexel OBGYN student interest group for first-year and second-year medical students. This workshop was comprised of three in-person sessions: a didactic presentation, a live demonstration on two soft-embalmed donors, and supervised hands-on practice. Following the workshop, participants were invited to complete a voluntary, anonymous survey.

Results

A post-workshop survey, containing Likert-scale and open-ended questions, was distributed to all attendees (N=20). All strongly agreed that soft-embalmed donor training improved pelvic exam understanding over simulation training alone. Most reported improved anatomy and technical skill (85%), trauma-informed care integration (95%), appropriate instructor ratio (90%), and pacing (70%). All strongly agreed instruction, environment, and preparedness were of high quality.

Discussion

Early integration of donor-based pelvic examination training into pre-clinical medical education is feasible and highly valued by learners. This approach enhanced confidence, preparedness, and anatomical understanding while reinforcing professionalism and trauma-informed care, supporting its broader incorporation into medical curricula.
