Title : MRI case report of the rare ovarian mucinous cystadenoma and fibroma collision tumor

Abstract:

Background: A collision tumor is defined as the presence of two distinct tumor types without any histological intermixing of the individual cell types. They have been commonly reported in various organs, such as the oesophagus, stomach, skin, lungs, liver, adrenals, thyroid and uterus. It is rarely seen in the ovary (1). Teratoma is considered one of the most common components of collision combination in the ovary (2). In the ovary, the most frequent combination to be reported is that of a teratoma and mucinous tumors. Collision tumors of the ovary can present in a wide range of age group between 18 and 66 years. Mostly unilateral, they vary in size from 2 to 200 cm (1). We here present an extremely rare collision tumor combination of fibroma with mucinous cystadenoma in a perimenopausal female.
Aim of the study: This presentation aims to report MRI findings of a pathologically proven case of an ovarian mucinous cystadenoma and fibroma collision tumor.
Patients and Methods: A case report of a 45 peri-menopausal female presented with chronic abdominal heaviness at the Diagnostic Radiology Department, Faculty of medicine, Cairo University. The patient was evaluated by history taking, laboratory and radiological assessment. Total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpino-oopherectomy was done and post-operative histopathological assessment revealed ovarian mucinous cystadenoma and fibroma collision tumor.
Conclusion: The most common form of the extremely rare ovarian collision tumors in the literature is the combination of teratomas. We report an MRI of an even rarer ovarian collision tumor, containing no teratomas, of mucinous cystadenoma and fibroma.
Keywords: Collision, ovarian, mucinous cystadenoma, fibroma.
