Title : Enhancing maternal and newborn health through trauma-informed and holistic midwifery care
Abstract:
Maternal and newborn health outcomes remain a global concern, with rising disparities in maternal morbidity and neonatal care. This presentation explores the integration of trauma-informed, evidence-based midwifery care to optimize outcomes for mothers and newborns. Trauma, including adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), has been linked to increased pregnancy complications, poor neonatal outcomes, and postpartum challenges. Addressing trauma within the perinatal care model through education, emotional support, and individualized care plans can lead to improved maternal mental health and neonatal well-being.
This session will cover strategies such as comprehensive prenatal screenings, holistic interventions including nutrition and supplementation, and culturally sensitive birth planning. Emphasis will be placed on the role of midwifery-led care in reducing interventions, increasing access to supportive environments, and addressing disparities, particularly among marginalized populations. Furthermore, discussion will include how trauma-informed doulas and midwives can facilitate improved birth experiences, leading to lower cesarean rates, higher breastfeeding success, and better long-term maternal-infant bonding.
The session aims to provide healthcare professionals with actionable insights on incorporating trauma-informed methodologies into their practice to enhance maternal and newborn health worldwide.
